I apologize for length of my previous reply.
This blog's intention was "Tell us about your WoW addiction." and I got carried away and ended up writing an (extremely) lengthy method to help WoW addicts.
So.... sorry about that.

As of November '08, I had three level 70 Alliance characters: Shaman(male), Warrior(female), and Priest(male) on a First-generation PvP Realm (i.e. the realm was one of 1st servers available to join: basically meaning it had a lot of "well experienced" players).
Combined all three characters had over 250 days play time.
Then the 2nd expansion pack: "Wrath of the Lich King" was released.
I said to myself:
"You know, I've already gone through one expansion. All the time I've spent acquiring end-game gear, securing a position in the #1 guild on the server, all the in-game money I've earned: it's going mean absolutely nothing. With nothing more than $40 cash and a little time spent acquiring 10 more levels (going from 70 to 80) - everyone's going to be on the same level again. You know what? I'm done."
I knew that the temptation to buy the expansion and "just see what the new stuff is like" was going to be very high, so with google as my aid, I found a generic "Sell your WoW account" website. I typed in what lvl and gear my characters had, and I sold my account for $100 (would have been $300 if I did it in October instead of November.)

It was by far and away the best decision of my life!
Was I addicted? Oh yeah I was, but I didn't realize it for about 2 months.
Now where was I going with this? oh yeah: If you know someone who is addicted to WoW, and you want/need them to stop, here's a different way of approaching them that may end with positive results.

Let's say the WoW addict's name is Bill. The end goal of this procedure is to use acquiring real-life money as an incentive to have Bill decide to sell his account of his own free will. Once his current account is no longer part of his control, his desire to play should decrease dramatically.

METHOD START:

STEP 1 - LET BILL TALK ABOUT WHAT HE KNOWS: World Of Warcraft.
Wait for a situation where Bill is not actually playing WoW at that particular moment whether it be dinner, grabbing drink from kitchen, doesn't really matter as long as you don't approach Bill while he's at the computer - he'll only be half-listening, and will definitely opt for the answer that ends with you leaving asap.
When you've found that proper timing, ask this question: "I've heard some people actually get real life money for their characters? Is that true?" The focus should be on *other* WoW players. More than likely, Bill already knows about people selling their characters and will start talking about it instantly because the topic is the only thing he knows: World of Warcraft.

STEP 2 - THERE MIGHT BE PROFIT TO BE GAINED.
Ask the question: "Bill, have you ever looked up how much your characters are worth?"
If yes - "How much?"
If no, you can ask him to look it up for you. But that will require coming up with some bullsh*t excuse, and most likely he will see what you're trying to do. Better method is to go to the websites that buy WoW Accounts and find out what info they ask for. You can ask Bill for bits & pieces of info sporadically, then find out the $$ figure for yourself. If you find out the $$ for yourself, don't run and tell Bill the instant you have it, it's all about timing and the way you deliver the info:
Example of good delivery: "Hey Bill, you know my boss was telling me that his son starting playing World of Warcraft about 2 months ago, but get this: he spoils his son so much that instead of leveling up himself, he bought a *Warlock* online for *$200*." (where Warlock and $200 should be substituted for Bill's character and sell amount).

STEP 3 (final step)- HOPEFULLY BILL CAN STILL BE TEMPTED BY NON-WOW RELATED ITEMS, BUT BILL HAS TO MAKE THE DECISION. YOU CAN SWEETEN THE DEAL, BUT TRYING TO FORCE IT WILL ONLY DECREASE THE CHANCE OF SUCCESS.
Hopefully by learning a little bit about the game yourself, the communication flow between you and Bill has improved a little bit. By now Bill should know that he *can* sell his account and he *should* know (either by his own research or yours) a solid and reliable $$ figure on what his account is worth.
I don't want to come across as saying you should try to "bribe" Bill into not playing WoW anymore. Rather, I will phrase it as offering Bill additional positive reasons to stop playing.
Example: "Hey Bill, because I believe it'll be good for you, I will match dollar-for-dollar whatever money you're able to sell your character for. If you can find someone to buy your account for $300, I will give you $300 as well."
Basically follow the pattern of: "Hey Bill, in addition to whatever money you get from selling your account, ."

END OF METHOD

The hardest and most difficult issue with WoW addicts is making them realize that there is indeed a life away from the game.
Leading up to now, WoW has become their life. They eat, they sleep (a little), and they play WoW with other players. The other players have essentially become their entire social network, and they label these other players as their "friends".
WoW addicts truly believe: "All my friends play WoW - if I stop playing, I stop interacting with my friends. I don't want to stop talking with my friends." It has become the center of their social life, and just the thought of breaking those social connections makes them extremely defensive and emotional.

In conclusion: WoW addicts have a much better chance of deciding to stop playing the game if they have to start the game all-over from Level 1. It's the best chance of having them realize the fact that despite all the time & effort they pour into the game, they're not getting anything worthwhile in return.

P.S. DAMN I really didn't intend on writing that much when I started.

Hello, my name is Chris, and I am 9 months clean. I haven't had a flashback in about 2 months ( that itchy feeling that makes you say "Come on, up your account, you know you want to")
I have two level 80's (shaman/warlock) and a level 70 (warrior) , alliance on my suspended account. I think I have finally recovered to the point where I am ready to sell off my account and be completely free of this addiction.
I have a two year old son, and the thing that really mobilized me to quit was when I realized that there was about a month and a half period of time that I couldn't remember doing anything with my son, or any of the things that he did, and I would not allow myself to lose my son's babyhood to a F'ing game. It is funny too, I am a life long gamer, but this is the only one that I have had this trouble with not being able to just walk away from. I think I am done giving my money to Blizzard entertainment.

HI.. If someone wants to ask my method to exit a 3 year addiction to wow, I will tell you: 1. find in your memories something you liked to do. 2. download all the seasons of Dexter TV series. 3 (the most critical) ERASE all your PJs (in my case, one lvl 80, one lvl 74, one lvl 72, and one lvl 61). 4. ERASE the game out of ALL your PCs, Macs, AND removable backup drives, and throw away the DVDs, so next time you want to play you will have to wait for the 12 GB of game data to download. 5. Get popcorns and Coke, and watch Dexter up until you fall asleep. 6. When you have already finished watching Dexter, just get out, walk to the mountain and start doing all that ypu used to like doing before playing WOW.

And, of course, if you desire to play again, remember thar Ddexter doesn't play WOW and he is so happy. :-)

regards

Im Pat ive played 2 years and had 5 characters over level 60 on both horde and alliance, a druid, paladin, rogue, shaman and warrior.
I sold my account today for $600 and am not going back because I think it takes a lot out of life especially grades and such. I think that everyone posting here with problems should either delete their characters gear and their characters then cancel their subscription, so they can't go back. Games are fun but you should spend most of your time doing real life stuff that matters and save games for when that is done. Trust me, delete your stuff, you wont regret it.

What you all can do is just cancel or stop paying for the account...find another hobby or ask yourself this, "What would my life be like in the next ten years if I continue to play WoW?" It may not be easy but you all have a choice. Don't lose your life into that game like others have; you've heard of the people who've killed themselves because of a friend who died in the game (not dying in real life).

- Thorien
- 65
- Not addicted too badly, especially compared to my college days (only played at a friend's dorm, so I had to get in as much as I could when I was chilling with her... frequently stayed up 'til 4 AM).
- Horde
- Female (IRL as well)
- Priest
- Herb/Alch
- Just recently respec'ed disc/holy (was more holy than disc prior to switch)
- Don't remember how many blues/purples off the top of my head, but I have a good number.
- Bloodsworn Legion
- Don't remember offhand, but not a lot (holy priest, LOL).
- Boys want to date me, but they are kind of lame. Or live far away.
- There are weeks when I don't play at all. When I do sit down to play it's usually 4-5 hours at a time. Maybe averages to 10 hours/week. Not too bad, right? The only other thing I'd be doing at that time of night is sleeping or reading a book.

I hate wow. Play a real video game instead of this pathetic excuse of one. Be addicted to drugs so that you at least have an excuse to quit your job and be a loser.

Go outside and make some real friends.

That is all.

This is my 2nd attempt to stop playing...1st time stayed off for 3 months. This time it took me 2 months since expansion came out. Re-installed and played till 5am almost every day...sometimes I do 3 days straight (with washroom/water breaks, but no sleep).
